To be free to be ourself is the subject today in my e-mail with a very good surf aquaintance and treasured friend. Had to see it in another to remind myself about my own freedom.

As I walked across the parking structure into the Hospital on Teusday to volunteer in the ER I found myself thinking "I get to do this!" Happily like looking forward to a visit to an amusement park like a child or a surf these days!

To help people. To take the time to express your happiness and passion even in the face of tragedy in some cases, I have been taught by nurses to help with such expressions of happiness and helpfulness. You can smile... "BE FREE" and tell them they are doing the right thing here for the patient and put them at ease.

Free. What does that mean to us? Each something different.

Enjoy the perfect silence next to a tree in the woods with only the whisper of far away breezes of the Sierra, or the crash of surf and rolling rocks at San Onofre as you nap in the van after a surf.

I hope we all find a little freedom each day and new passion as we turn each curve in the trail we choose.

Well here I am with the Carolers, Ritz Carlton Dana Point. They had an Andy Irons signed short board and one from Kelly Slater as well in the lobby. They had longboards as well. Looked like a Black "The Cat" and several others in perfect shape.

Didn't do any Holiday Imbibing, but entered the drawing for 20 Holiday Baskets which included some very nice alcoholic selections. Looser on that! The meal was just great.

We also learned about the hospital budget and how much we help from the CEO who thanked us. We gave gifts in the huge category for sure but the whole budget of the Hospital is 1.4 Billion gross and 340 million bottom line.

That hospital really serves a huge purpose for all of Orange County. Being a trauma center we pull patients from all over. Not only fun to be part of that with so many nice people but really exciting sometimes. We saved another OD Tuesday evening. I got to help pull him out of the car, not breathing! 20 minutes later he was sitting up talking to friends. What a staff we have!

Cole and I got a nice surprise with chest high waves and no wind this morning about 9:30. We paddled right out to only medium crowd at the point. We had about 2 hours of fun and came home to wash and shopping. It rained in Mission Viejo this evening with a little lightening and thunder. Yard work tomorrow?

Fun to contemplate the short version by Tim while we have no waves. I would like to hear what and who this observation is based on. In other words how did he come to this conclusion and who and where did he see this surf experience. Did he partake himself? Was he tripping when he watched and or surfed himself. I do have friends who did and possibly still do. At least two are no longer with us on this plane. One, of course is Tim. His ashes are in space! Truely a perfect choice for Tim!

Cole and I surfed small Sano on Sat. and skipped it after looking on Sun. in favor of the drive to Encinitas and Swami's again. Cole did well on his 8' Cooperfish. I was under gunned on a small heavy 9'4" Cooperfish which I sunk in smaller waves. We had a couple overhead sets but mostly shoulder high waves in a crowd.

Surf Report

Cole and I surfed the point at Sano yesterday noon in chop shoulder high with shark sightings by two separate ends of the beach. We found out after. Again today in better glassy conditions early about shoulder high. It is not that dangerous. Better chances of accident on the freeway for sure. I think sharks are much smarter than So. Cal. drivers in general. Mean it!

Tom Blake 1902-1994 is the obvious link between the ancient South Pacific waterman and the twentieth century Anglo waterman. Not only did he precede most other Anglo visitors to Hawaii that surfed, he understood and adopted the Aloha frame-of-mind and possessed the unique ability to produce water craft in harmony with the previous one thousand years of surfing's progression.

Blake placed surfboards, paddleboards, and life saving equipment within reach of the interested athlete, lifeguard, and seaside visitor. In Blake's life, there was no separation between religion, surfing, swimming, building surfboards, eating, and exercise. At the time, no one guessed that his unorthodox life style would one day become the accepted standard for the beach culture.

Blake's early published work, both word and photographic, awoke new generations of surfers and educated them to the vast richness of their surfing heritage. His pioneering efforts continue to inspire today's surfers with the knowledge that their lifestyle is one firmly seated in traditions both intelligent and legitimate for generations to come.

Dave Barry sent us this picture of Cole from Sano this morning on our new 9'2".

We decided to go South on the 5 fwy to Swami's and Cole got some more nice waves with that crew. About sholder high in both breaks.

He was out at Swami's for an hour and a half on his 8' Cooperfish Comet.

Got alot of waves. Then some new Sanuks at Becker Encinitas.

The surf is poor today so it's a good thing Cole and I got such good waves yesterday, Sunday at the point. Today it's blown and rainy according to A J who went out anyway. Of course!

We haven't heard from Basham Surfboards about our new 9'2" getting the glass job yet but I resolve to not bother them and know it will be perfect when complete. Well worth a little patience.

Surf update

Waves have been great with water temps in the mid 60's this week. So we wore wet suits and trunked it once in the hot weather. I mean hot. 110 degrees in Mission Viejo two days ago.

Waves were head high again this week on Sunday/Monday and dropped a little Teusday but still fun. Cole is still after the surf so we celebrate the waves together in the water!

   I got a call earlier this week from the surf supply, Basham Surfboards. Jeff asked if I needed a cut lap or fade on the rail glass. That means one very important thing, only! They are glassing our new ride! We are hoping for more magic. It sure is fun to shape your own board.
   Kathleen has a special request and color design, Girl colors and width, in mind for the next board. If she sticks with surfing we will do another one special, and let her put the pigment on the foam before the glass. She surfed really well in small waves yesterday morning.
   Cole and I will surf Saturday morning, small. We got some real big waves last weekend during the ASP at Trestles. He got a free hat and shades at the contest after our surf at the Point. We also got our six wave pounding before the exit.
   By the way we went with cut lap. That makes the rail seams very visible and pretty, old style.

I dropped off the new shape today on the way to Sano where there was no surf to speak of.
I got to see Brad Basham and Chris Kasan who shaped me a board back in 1997.

It was fun to show Chris my shape and he showed me how I could shape at Bashams in a real shaping room very reasonably next time I need to shape a board.

The rails are nice and low for a quick turn with plenty of foam left for float and speed. We go back for glass in a day or two.

Nose is lowered here and with Kathleen's help, since the blank came with extra kick in nose and tail. The finished product is not far from the blank.

Once you have a few boards under the old belt it gets easy and I really wish it took longer. The foam and wood move fast under the hand planes. Power would only be necessary in a more money making focus.

After template is cut and the rails are lowered in the middle 3/4s of the board with Cole's help.

Basic blank before template, USA blue.

Since the kids have become interested in the surf again we have purchased another blank after some years without shaping.

Cedar 1" stringer had to be ordered but came in less than a week.

9'2" will be the finished length 3 1/2" thick.

15" pin tail, 23 1/2" just forward of middle, 19"nose.

We started Thursday 9/2/10.

This is going to take a while so we can enjoy the process slowly and get another shape that works well like the last one #4.

Waiting for a cooler day to resume planeing. Sunday or Monday should do.

Malibu and Rincon held no waves for our trip North on Hwy 1. But Cowles in Santa Cruz gave us some rockin' waist high long rides on a very warm day with incredibly comfortable full suit water around 60 degrees. No pictures for proof we just surfed...sorry!

We also rode the roller coasters on the boardwalk.

Clam chowder on Fisherman's wharf, Monterey was also great. The kids got their first ride across the Golden Gate and we broke for Mom's new house in Danville and the all night drive back to Sano and work!

Cole has rediscovered surfing lately so we'll see you every day now at Sano. We ordered a new blank from Bashams and will probably have a new board for around $350 give or take. Our shape and they glass. Hopefully we make another magic Sano shape like our last board. This is our 5th shape in foam with our wood board it makes 6. $350 is really cheap compared to $800 out the door at the shop if you're lucky.

Pam and Husband, Boulder Jack are famous world wide climbers and trekers. Jack has been to many summits and climbs alot of ice as a guide.

This trip was just Pam and Pisco for a 5 night back pack in the very high country, Colorado. Just a break before she goes back to teaching and counciling in the public schools in Boulder.
